Recall that Mount was widely criticized for his sub-par display against the USA a few days ago.

The 23-year-old has started both of England’s Group B matches, with Gareth Southgate’s side beating Iran 6-2 before a goalless draw with the USA.

Mount played 71 minutes before he was substituted by Manchester City star Phil Foden against Iran but played for the whole match in the goalless draw with the United States.

Many, including former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, felt that Mount should have been replaced by Foden in the match against the USA, with England lacking creativity and needing a spark.

But Hoddle believes it was unfair to single out the Chelsea star for criticism ahead of the Wales clash.

“I think it is unfair that Mason Mount has been singled out for criticism. He did not do anything worse than any other player in the game against the USA. He nearly scored, he got himself into good positions,” Hoddle told Betfair.

“Mason Mount is one of the best players we have in the country, and you would have him for 38 games a season. He is nailed on to be in your team. The criticism has been unfair.”

He added, “I really like Mason Mount, and this is no detriment to him, but if Foden had the same amount of games as him, his productivity and goals would be up there, and we would see what he is all about.”
