The Kwara State Government, in conjunction with the Agricultural Development Project have trained over 40 women and students on the processing of sweet potatoes into confectionaries.
The one-day training workshop, held at the Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday, had in attendance the principal officers of the ministry, nutritionists, students and staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and ADP.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mallam AbdulLateef Alakawa, said the training would add value to the state government’s programmes on food security.
While appreciating the organisers of the workshop, the commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Agriculture Services, Alhassan Mohammed, disclosed that the present administration would spare no efforts at ensuring availability of nutritious food and wellness of the people in the state.
He explained that the training would further help in eradicating poverty especially among women and youths in the state.
In her opening remarks, the Managing Director, KWADP, Dr. Khadijat Ahmed, disclosed that the training was conceptualised to address the prevalence issue of malnutrition in the country.
Ahmed, who is also a nutritionist, identified deficiency of vitamins in the body system as the major cause of blindness.
She appealed to well meaning individuals, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, and government at all levels to join the campaign against malnutrition in the country.
