Residents of Olomi, Olunde and other communities along the Ibadan-Ijebu Igbo road have appealed to the federal government not to abandon the ongoing Olomi-Olunde-Ijebu Igbo road project.
The residents made this appeal during a visit by Newspot to the communities along the road on Monday.
Newspot gathered that the road project, which is from Ibadan to Ijebu-Igbo is a 45-kilometre project by the Federal Ministry of Works to construct the road in Oyo and Ogun states.
The road was awarded in 2019 and it was to be completed in 24 months.
But, a visit to the road showed that earth work, stone base and asphalt overlay of the first phase of the road, which is a seven-kilometre stretch from Olomi junction to Olunde has been done.
It was gathered that the remaining part of the road has not been completed.
Residents of the communities such as Olomi and Olunde within Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State have however appealed to the federal government to complete the road.
The residents, while expressing gratitude for the completion of work on the Olomi-Olunde-Ayegun part of the Ibadan, urged the federal government not to abandon the road.
A community leader, Alhaji Yekeen Ishola, who resides in Olunde, called on the federal government to consider the plight of the thousands of people in the area.
He urged the federal government to ensure that the work is properly funded so that it can be completed in good time.”
He said, “I called on the Federal Government to consider the plight of the thousands of people in the area as the government is winding down.
“Help us by making sure that the work is properly funded so that it can be completed in good time.
“The project was a relief to the residents and a sign that they had not been forgotten by the authorities”.
A resident of Ayegun-Olomi, Mrs. Abosede Salami, also called for quick completion of the road.
“So, we thank them for that and wish that the work runs faster to Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State.
“We are grateful to the government for remembering us, especially now that the Christmas season is upon us.”
