It’s official. Republicans have won enough seats to control the House of Representatives for the next two years of the Biden administration.
The latest pick was Republican Mike Garcia who is now projected to have won California’s 27th Congressional District, securing at least 218 seats for Republicans to control the House when the 118th U.S. Congress convenes on January 3, 2023.
The projection, by the Associated Press, means that there will be a divided government in Washington with the Democrats controlling the Senate and the White House and the Republicans leading the House.
While the Republicans have won 218 seats, the Democrats have secured 209 seats with eight seats still in play. The U.S. House of Representatives has 435 seats and 218 seats are needed to control it.
Coming more than a week after Americans went to the polls on November 8, the win by Republicans is very slim but a win all the same, and many expect that they will launch series of investigations and block President Biden’s ambitious agenda.
Kevin Owen McCarthy, the current House Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives since 2019, who was re-elected by his colleagues on Tuesday, would likely become the next Speaker, replacing Nancy Pelosi.
President Biden congratulated McCarthy in a statement, saying that he is “ready to work with House Republicans to deliver results for working families.working with them.”
Biden wrote, “Last week’s elections demonstrated the strength and resilience of American democracy. There was a strong rejection of election deniers, political violence, and intimidation. There was an emphatic statement that, in America, the will of the people prevails.
“I congratulate Leader McCarthy on Republicans winning the House majority, and am ready to work with House Republicans to deliver results for working families.
“In this election, voters spoke clearly about their concerns: the need to lower costs, protect the right to choose, and preserve our democracy. As I said last week, the future is too promising to be trapped in political warfare. The American people want us to get things done for them.
