The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be 22nd edition of the greatest show on Earth.

England will head to the Middle East as one of the favourites to win the World Cup and write their names in the history books once and for all.

But Gareth Southgate’s men will not be the only team looking to get their hands on the trophy in Qatar, with the usual cast of France, Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina all eyeing winter glory.

But who won the World Cup last time the tournament was held in 2018?

Read on to find out about the defending champions.

Who won the last World Cup?

France won the last World Cup in Russia in 2018.

The French won their second World Cup by beating Croatia 4-2 in the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

A Mario Mandzukic own goal put Les Blues 1-0 up after 18 minutes but the Croatians equalised just 10 minutes later through Ivan Perisic.

Didier Deschamps’ side retook the lead with an Antoine Griezmann penalty just before half-time.

Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe put France 4-1 ahead with 65 minutes on the clock, but a Mario Mandzukic strike – this time in the right net – four minutes later was not enough to stop the French march to the title.

Which team has won the most World Cups?

Brazil hold the record for the most number of World Cup wins with five, having won the tournament in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.

Germany have won the World Cup on four occasions in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014.

Italy also join the Germans with four World Cup trophies in their trophy cabinet having gone all the way in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006.

Argentina, France and Uruguay have all won the World Cup on two separate occasions.

England and Spain are the only other teams who have reached the pinnacle of the global game with one win apiece.

This means that out of the 21 previous editions of the FIFA World Cup, South American sides have won 9 titles with three different countries.

Meanwhile, Europe have won 12 titles with five different nations.

When did England last win the World Cup?

England’s one and only World Cup win famously came in 1966.

Sir Alf Ramsey’s side beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time in front of almost 97,000 spectators at Wembley stadium on July 30.

Geoff Hurst scored the only ever World Cup final hat-trick to hand England the Jules Rimet trophy.

Since that legendary day in the summer of 1966, England’s best results in the World Cup have been the semi-final stage at Italia 1990 and Russia 2018.
