The omission of Genk team-mates Mike Trésor and Bryan Heynen from Belgium’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar has come as a big surprise to Nigeria international, Paul Onuachu, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Belgian Football Federation on Friday announced the 26-man squad for the biggest football showpiece in Qatar with Trésor and Heynen left out, much to the disappointment of the Nigerian.

Aside from Onuachu, who has scored an astonishing 13 league goals in 14 games for Genk this season, both players played key roles in Genk’s amazing start to the season.

Trésor, a midfielder, has been outstanding for the league leaders and has scored five goals and contributed 13 assists in 17 games, while Heynen has six goals with two assists from his midfield role.

Trésor, 23, has been the best creator in the Jupiler Pro League, with his 13 assists unmatched by any other.

Despite their impressive start to the 2022/23 campaign, Roberto Martínez overlooked both midfielders for the trip to Qatar.

Speaking with HLN, the Super Eagles striker said he was shocked by the omission of the two players.

“I was shocked when I heard that and I wasn’t the only one,” Onuachu was quoted as saying.

“You feel that all of Belgium has a hard time with this, don’t you? Look at Mike’s stats. Nobody does better. It is sometimes crazy how things work in football.”

“If the sport were fair, Mike and Bryan Heynen would have been there in Qatar. The Belgian football top also knows that those two deserve it.”
