A yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist lost his life on Wednesday when a black Lexus car crushed two motorcyclists and four passengers around the Arepo Junction, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the car was going inward Ogun State when a truck heading in the same direction rammed into it.
An eyewitness, who asked to be identified only as Mohammed for personal reasons, said immediately the truck hit the car, it sped off.
He noted that the car driver lost control and rammed into two motorcyclists and four passengers.
Mohammed said, “The motorcyclists carried two passengers each and were riding against traffic when the Lexus car crushed them. When the car hit them, it also ran into the drainage in front of the filling station at Arepo Junction.
“The car driver got down and rushed to a police station to report the case. The impact of the accident crushed the forehead of one of the motorcyclists and the man died on the spot.
“About five others were rushed to a hospital. Some were taken to a nearby hospital in Arepo but they were rejected. The victims were later rushed to the Accident and Emergency Centre along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for treatment.”
Another eyewitness, Tunde Gabriel, said the accident could have been averted if the driver of the Lexus car was not at top speed.
He added, “I saw that two people died on the spot and four other victims were rushed to a hospital. But from what we gathered, up to four people died. The driver got out of the vehicle after the accident.
“If the driver does not have a driving licence, he could be charged despite driving on the right lane and the motorcyclists riding against traffic.”
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police and soldiers, were among the emergency management responders that rescued some of the injured victims.
Onlookers, including passersby and passengers, were seen lamenting the accident at the front of the filling station at the junction.
Video clips in possession of our correspondent showed no fewer than four persons lying motionless on the ground after the incident happened around 1pm.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, FRSC, Umar Ahmed, said the accident involved seven persons, adding that one motorcyclist died.
He said, “The crash involved a truck, a Lexus car and an Okada rider riding against traffic. The fact that people were lying motionless on the ground does not mean they are dead. The motorcyclist died on the spot, but six persons got injured. Altogether, seven people were involved in the accident and the injured victims were rushed to the emergency centre.”
