The mass layoffs announced in Twitter have affected the newly-formed African team of the social media platform based in Ghana.

A former Senior Partner Manager at the Twitter Africa office, Bernard Kafui Sokpe, announced his exit from the company on Friday.

Via his Twitter handle, he said, “It’s been a year working at a place I never imagined I’ll ever get to work. I’m glad that I could represent for Africa & I didn’t let us down. My best career experience by far & it was beautiful whilst it lasted. Much love to all the amazing tweeps that made it worth it. #OneTeam.”

Meanwhile, the former co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has apologised for the mass layoffs and taken responsibility for it.

He tweeted, “Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment. I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that.

“I am grateful for, and love, everyone who has ever worked on Twitter. I don’t expect that to be mutual in this moment…or ever…and I understand.”

Elon Musk

The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, on Friday, claimed that the company was losing four million dollars every day and thus had no choice but to downsize.

He tweeted, “Regarding Twitter’s reduction in force, unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day. Everyone exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50% more than legally required.”
