Rio Ferdinand has tipped Graham Potter to raid his old club in January to bolster his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

The former Brighton boss had made an encouraging start to his tenure having replaced Thomas Tuchel in September.

Potter’s unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt on Saturday, however, as the Brighton team he built ran riot and cantered to a 4-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

Chelsea invested heavily in new players over the summer, before Tuchel’s sudden departure, and Todd Boehly is expected to make funds available again to help Potter build a squad in his own image.

The 47-year-old played a key role in helping Leandro Trossard establish himself as a top class Premier League midfielder and the Belgium international has gone to another level this season.

‘Trossard, he’s one of the players I’ve heard there hasn’t even had a bid for him since he’s been there, someone told me,’ Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.

‘This guy is doing major bits right now. If Potter doesn’t go back there to try and sign him I’d be amazed.

‘The best part of his game is being creative. He’s just scored a few goals lately, that’s not even his game.

‘I think the creative and the approach play in his game is unreal. The only thing I was asking for before was a bit more end product and he’s actually doing that now.’

Potter’s immediate focus, meanwhile, will be on responding to Saturday’s setback and cementing top spot in their Champions League group.

The Blues advanced to the knockout stages following last week’s narrow win over RB Salzburg and can go through to the last 16 as Group E winners with a positive result against Dinamo Zagreb at home tomorrow.

The Chelsea manager will be hoping for a response from his players who he refused to criticise after they suffered a chastening experience at the hands of Roberto de Zerbi’s side on the south coast.

‘I’m not going to throw the players under the bus at all because they’ve been brilliant for us and given everything for me,’ said Potter in his post match press conference.

‘So I have to take responsibility and try to find a way for us to do better. We’ve had an incredible schedule, this was our ninth game and sixth away match.

‘We’ve had three wins in the Champions League to qualify, tough matches away at Brentford and Aston Villa, so this isn’t to complain, but it’s what we’re up against. We met a really good opponent today, and they did really well.’
