Four Thousand civil servants in Kano State, whose tenure in civil service was extended under the previous administration, are to go on retirement in December 2024.
The decision to reverse the extension policy, which allowed workers to remain in service beyond the usual retirement age, was made by the current administration led by Governor Abba Yusuf.
This move reinstates the standard retirement guidelines of 60 years of age or 35 years of service.
The Chief of Staff to the Kano State Government, Abdullahi Musa, confirmed that a committee was formed to assess the situation and verify the number of affected workers.
After thorough investigation, it was determined that 4,000 individuals would be required to retire by the end of the year.
Musa explained that the affected civil servants would be required to submit their retirement notices by the end of September.
He also provided details about the state government’s efforts to manage the vacancies created by the mass retirements.
The government has taken steps to address the situation, including ensuring continuity in service delivery and engaging new staff to fill the vacant positions.
