Chief Press Secretary to Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun state, Mr. Ismail Omipidan, has advised journalists to prioritise their safety prior and during the forthcoming general elections in 2023.

Omipidan noted that the need to prioritise their safety was necessary, because, it is when they are alive that they can write stories.

He spoke during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B annual public lecture and award presentation with the theme “2023 general elections and electoral issues in Nigeria: The media perspective”, held on Thursday in Ibadan.

At the event were Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and NUJ President, Alhaji Waheed Odusile, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Professor Shola Omotola, NUJ Vice President, Zone B, Ronke Samo, NUJ Chairmen and secretaries in the six states that make up of Zone B and other stakeholders.

Omipidan who spoke with journalists after he was given a meritorious award, insisted that the only way for journalists to help themselves in the coming elections is to prioritise their safety.

He explained that safety of journalists is very paramount when they are on the field to cover electoral activities.

The former political editor of Sun Newspapers, also encouraged journalists to be objective, fair and be balanced.

He explained that journalists should endeavour to write reports that will make Nigerians make informed decisions in the elections.

Omipidan said, “Safety first. They must prioritise their safety. It is very paramount. Safety of journalists is very important. They must always think of their safety when on the filed.

“Having said that, they must uphold the ethics of the journalism profession. They must be fair, balanced and be objective in their analysis and reportage, they must provide a level playing ground and so something that will make Nigerians make informed decisions on who they will vote for in 2023.

“They must be very objective no matter how close the source is to them. No matter the amount of trust you have for the person, you must cross check your facts.

“All Nigerians knew that there were some issues on ground before Governor Gboyega Oyetola came on board. Some of the issues are the issue of half salary, unified school uniform.

“But, all those issues are not there again. We don’t have the issue of half salary again. We are paying salaries as at when due and we are paying pension and gratuity. Most of the roads we constructed are roads that were abandoned several years ago”.
