No fewer than 12 companies on Friday bid for a contract for utilisation of the recovered $954,000 loot from the late former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
The Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, who declared the bid open said the ministry was implementing what had been agreed on by the government of Nigeria and the United States.
The United States in February signed an agreement with the Nigerian government for the return of about $954,000 stolen by a former governor of Bayelsa State, the late Deprieye Alamieyeseigha.
The then US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, who signed the Asset Return Agreement with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, at the Federal Ministry of Justice headquarters in Abuja stressed that the returned loot should be used to improve healthcare infrastructure in Bayelsa State.
At the bid opening occasion, Jedy-Agba said the bid has two lots, which include recruitment of non-governmental organisations that will be responsible for implementation and actual monitoring of the project.
Jedy-Agba stated, “The agreement states that in order to implement the renovation of the primary health center in Bayelsa, the Federal Government of Nigeria will work with the Bayelsa State government toward implementation of the project.”
She said the projects to be undertaken include identifying specific primary health centers in Bayelsa State that would be renovated and handed over to the people of the state.
