π Milford, Massachusetts β A Massachusetts community is reeling after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested an 18-year-old Brazilian student, Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, during what was supposed to be a joyful graduation weekend. The high school junior, known for his music, athleticism, and leadership at Milford High School, was taken into immigration custody after a traffic stop initially aimed at locating his father.
According to ICE officials, agents had been searching for Gomes Da Silvaβs father, who is allegedly residing unlawfully in the U.S. However, when they discovered Marcelo was also undocumented, they arrested him as well β despite him not being the investigationβs original target.
π· βThis canβt be happening,β said Andrew Mainini, Gomes Da Silvaβs volleyball coach, who was texted by a shocked teammate during the arrest.
The student, who has lived in Milford since the age of six, was en route to volleyball practice when he was pulled over by federal agents in four unmarked vehicles. ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons confirmed the arrest, saying that βwhen we find others unlawfully here, we are going to arrest them.β
The move has triggered widespread anger and sorrow across the community. Marceloβs detention prompted spontaneous protests, with hundreds of students β still in their graduation robes β marching from Milford High School to the town hall, chanting βFree Marcelo.β
His girlfriend, Julianys Rentas Figueroa, emotionally recalled their last phone call, revealing that he had been shackled at both wrists and ankles. βI havenβt spoken to him since then. I donβt know how heβs doing,β she said through tears.
Milford Police denied any involvement or prior knowledge of the arrest. Chief Robert Tusino stated: βMarcelo is somebody we donβt know… that tells you heβs probably not a troublemaker.β
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey condemned the incident, calling the arrest βdisturbingβ and warning that such actions βmake us all less safe.β
Marcelo remains in ICE custody, and immigration attorneys are reportedly working to stop a potential transfer to another state. Meanwhile, local officials and immigrant advocacy groups, such as Metrowest Worker Center, have vowed to support him and his family.
Superintendent Kevin McIntyre of Milford Public Schools emphasized that the school system plays no part in immigration enforcement, affirming support for βall students and families β including immigrants who are integral to our community.β
π Newspot Nigeria will continue monitoring developments in this case as Marcelo Gomes Da Silvaβs story draws national attention and renews debates about immigration enforcement practices in the United States.
